Timeline of events
November 2006 | Police officers Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar were arrested for the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu in October 2006. |
April 2009 | Azilah and Sirul were convicted by the Shah Alam High Court. |
August 2013 | The conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal. Both men were acquitted and walked free for more than a year until the prosecution appealed the decision. During the said time, Sirul had gone to Australia. |
January 2015 | The Federal Court upheld the High Court’s decision and reinstated the death penalty on both men. Azilah had been in jail as a death row inmate since, while Sirul was later held in Australia’s immigration detention for overstaying. Sirul was not sent back to Malaysia because Australia has a policy of not deporting people who face the death penalty. |
22 May 2018 | Kyrios prophesied that Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri will not be sentenced to death for their involvement in the murder of Altantuya Sharibu. However, they will be imprisoned. |
July 2023 | Following the establishment of the Mandatory Death Penalty Abolition Act 2023, which came into effect on July 4, Azilah applied for a review of his sentence. |
November 2023 | Sirul Azhar Umar was released from immigration detention in Australia. |
10 October 2024 | A three-judge panel substituted Azilah Hadri’s death sentence with 40 years in jail, effective from his date of arrest, and 12 strokes of the rotan. This fulfills Kyrios’ prophecy on 22 May 2018 about Azilah Hadri. |
Ongoing - as of 15 October 2024 | Lawyers acting for Altantuya’s family has requested the Malaysian attorney general to seek the extradition of Sirul Azhar Umar, following the sentence of Azilah Hadri. |
